Through Your Eyes is an award winning web-based project that captured the real experiences of Walker audience members as they explored the various programs of the art center. It functioned as a community outreach and audience building endeavor, enhancing the organization’s reputation for innovation and inclusiveness, and providing direct audience feedback and new insights into how the Walker can better serve its evolving constituencies.
Participants in the project represented the diversity of the Walker community, including a female rapper / Teens Arts Council activist, a jazz fan / bank executive, a grade school athlete who likes to cook and garden, a skeptical member of the Community Advisory Board, and a talented and gregarious curatorial intern.
Through video interviews, email exchanges, discussions with artists and Walker staff, and special behind the scenes tours, participants shared their experiences with visitors to the Walker web site, encouraging them to not only follow their own particular interests, but to make new connections between Walker’s broad and varied offerings.
Designed and produced in collaboration with virtually every department at the art center, Through Your Eyes was an early demonstration of the community building potential of interactive technology, supporting the organization’s ongoing repositioning as a new kind of art center, and providing inspiration for that year’s Annual Report, which featured thought provoking excerpts from the project.
